While the majority of the Sewanee student descended the Mountain for winter break, the men’s basketball team remained, queuing up for eight games to be played before classes started back. The team hosted four consecutive games, two of which were a part of the annual Lon Varnell classic; all were lost to the Tigers’ opponents. Key statistics include Trent William’s 19 points in the game against Rhodes, Tyler Brown’s 15 rebounds in the same game, and Zack Mulligan’s 18 points in the contest against Birmingham-Southern.
The team then went on two back-to-back road trips to play four more games. Notables in this block of games were Garrett Hollingsworth’s 18 points against DePauw, Andrew Little’s 20 points in the game against Southwestern, and Sewanee’s 40% shooting percentage from the field, also at the Southwestern game.
After eight consecutive losses, the Tigers were cheered on to a 62-55 win over Colorado College here at home. The gym was filled with alumni, prospects,
Highlanders/Wellingtons, cheerleaders, and fans alike. It may have been hunger for victory or the highly supportive crowd, but whatever it was, it caused the Tigers to break out of their losing streak. Three players (Garrett Hollingsworth, Lewis Affronti, and Trent Williams) scored in the double digits and the Tigers racked up on the rebounds(48 to Colorado College’s 42). What it came down to for Coach Bubba Smith was the “battle of the boards”.
Despite that win, the team did not gain much momentum. The next game saw Austin College take an early lead that the Tigers could not seem to overcome. Even though Trent Williams racked up 11 points, the team lost, putting Sewanee’s record at 4-13(1-8 in the conference).
The team is set to play two games on the road and will return to the Mountain on February 12th to play against DePauw.
