After an ungodly long amount of time without losing a game as a starter, Greg McElroy finally lost and Alabama tumbled from their top spot as the number one team in college football. After the Tide's disheartening loss to South Carolina, Ohio State assumed the number one position, with Auburn leaping in front of Alabama as the highest ranked team in the SEC (7).
The SEC championship race and the national championship race are still wide open. It's college football; anything can happen. Multiple teams, including Ohio State, TCU, Nebraska, LSU, and Auburn, would need a loss for the Tide-faithful to see their team head into the national championship.
LSU, on the other hand, is fighting to stay alive and Les Miles is campaigning for worst coach of the year. Near misses at Tennessee and Florida caused many Tiger-faithful to question the coach's rationality and sanity. After last season's time-management flubs, LSU is in store for some more disappointment as their season approaches tougher competition.
This next week features the headlining rematch of the Big-12 Championship with Texas visiting Nebraska. The Longhorn's 3-2 record has somewhat diminished the appeal for the game, but we can still expect an interesting game as Nebraska's freshman Heisman-hopeful, Taylor Martinez, goes up against Texas's stoic run defense.
In SEC play, nobody is safe; not even LSU who plays a 2-3 McNeese St. Alabama hopes to rebound against Ole Miss. Vanderbilt and Georgia will battle to see who is the worst (except Tennessee, who doesn't count) in the conference. Florida, now ranked 22nd, wants a dominating performance against Miss. St., and Arkansas will try to kill Auburn's perfect
