Field Hockey takes on NCAA Championship

By Liaren Harris

The Sewanee field hockey team closed out their season with a 14-6 regular season record, and an eight game winning streak. Their record was the school’s best in a decade and good enough to win the team its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title. The Tigers also received a bid to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championships Sewanee’s first in the 33 years of field hockey. There they faced off against Lynchburg, in Lynchburg, VA in the opening round. Lynchburg ended the Tiger’s win streak with a 4-0 shutout in the first round.

Good things for the Tigers, however, did not end after the Championship. Senior Claiborne Buckingham was named a 2008 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Senior All-Star and was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star game. That game will take place Sunday, November 23, at Ursinus College in Collegeville PA. Buckingham has already been named All-Region and All-Conference and is only two assists shy of the all-time SCAC career record. Congratulations to Buckingham and all of the Sewanee field hockey players.
