Room Selection

Students lined up at the BC last week anxiously waiting their turn to pick a room in which they will be living for the next year. Dreams of living in club Hump or St. Luke's filled the air only to be destroyed by proctors as they called out names and numbers. After checking the big sheets with crossed off rooms that lined the BC in the days leading up to selection, many were disheartened to find that their plans to triple in Hunter or live the sweet life in Humphreys had crumbled due to upperclassmen taking the room of their desire. However, not everyone was disappointed because someone had snagged the room they wanted, some students were simply disappointed in the system at large. Many students did not even receive a room assignment due to the reservations for the class of 2014. These students will be randomly placed over the summer and will have to cross their fingers that will not find themselves swimming amongst the freshmen in Gorgas. However, it was not just those at the bottom of the list that walked out of the BC disappointed. Rising junior Lizzie Gheorghita received the number one gownsmen pick for the class of 2012 and she too was disappointed in the room selection system. Lizzie will be studying abroad next year and therefore did not get to pick a room. She will thus be placed randomly over the summer along with the rest of students who will be studying abroad in the upcoming school year. It seems as if being placed randomly over the summer was the theme for this year's selection. The administration overbooks reservations for the class of 2014 because they don't have concrete knowledge of how many freshmen will be appearing on the domain in the coming year. It is understandable that they would over reserve than under reserve, but then why do these freshmen have reserved spaces in Humphreys and St. Luke's? One would think they would not have their paws on such prime real estate, and the administration would reserve them rooms in less desirable locations. Although the process of room selection is given much thought by the administration, it seems as if they could find a system that works for everyone, not just the class of 2014.
