On November 20th, GTU and Basic Needs hosted their annual "Curry for Kids" benefit at the Women's Center. Plate upon plate of curried chicken and vegetables were sold to hungry Sewanee students and community members to raise money for the Susan Hubbard School in Kendua, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The school is dedicated to educating Bangladeshi orphans and was built and run by Sewanee alum Richie Hubbard (C'09) and his parents, Dr. Tom and Susan Hubbard, for whom the school is named.

Richie Hubbard, who is now in his second year at Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Medicine, is the co-founder and president of Basic Needs Inc. Basic Needs provides housing, food, clothing, and job support for impoverished families and orphans in the capital city of Dhaka. Now, the organization plans to expand by building an orphanage and another primary school in a village, which will have a cleaner and safer environment than the city.

According to its website, Basic Needs Inc. is "a group dedicated to helping poor children in Dhaka Bangladesh. We are students united behind a common cause of providing for the needs of the world's poor, especially kids." GTU's annual joining with Basic Needs to host Curry for Kids, and Sewanee's warm support of the benefit prove that the university and its students truly are "united behind a common cause" and care about people in need, no matter where they are in the world.
