It's a cold November night and you're walking through central campus when, suddenly, you hear music coming from a big white house next to the McCrady dormitory. People are meandering around the front and sides of the building. Some of them are merely talking with friends while others are hauling musical instruments into the front door. Curious about this rather out of the ordinary activity, you wander into the building only to find the entryway almost completely blocked. You manage to squeeze past a few people and find yourself in a softly lit room filled with chairs, coffee, food, students, professors, and music. If this was you on Saturday November twentieth, then you witnessed the amazing annual tradition that is Arm and Trout. Every year students gather at the Greenhouse to show off their musical and/or various artistic talents. Students, and even professors, read poems, display artwork, and sing songs they have either composed themselves or happily hummed along to with the radio. This year's show started off with some tantalizing treats, including delicious coffee and homemade cookies, as our witty Italian friend, Cane West, introduced each act. Some of the performances this year included enchanting children's songs about whales and narwhals, sung by Eric Keen, enthralling haikus read/written by Dean Hayes, a few well-loved Beatles songs covered by Daniel Church and Ross Scarborough, a Neil Young song or two soloed by Rowan Jones, and a duet performance of "Hot ‘N Cold" and "Bad Romance" by Pam Guerra and yours truly. Other musical acts included Frank Hand, David Haskell, Ben Almassi, Dr. Potter, Stewart Moore, Josh King, The Gentlemen Jacks, Forest Mountain Hymnal, Peter Staffelbach, a collaborative performance by Wolfgang Boehm, Jacob Simpson, Sam Fox, and Richard Percy, and many others. So next year, when the leaves are gently dropping from the trees and the winter wind is starting to blow, drop on by the Greenhouse. There you'll find great food, enjoyable company, and some amazing Sewanee talent.
